Owais is the chairperson and a co-founder of Deaf Muslim UK. He is responsible for leading the Board and focusing it on strategic matters, overseeing the organisation and plays a pivotal role in fostering the relationship between the Board and management. In addition to his role, within the organisation, as Director of Education for which he is responsible for leading the BSL Qur’an Translation Project and the study of Islam.

Owais is currently an elected member of the Global Deaf Muslim Federation (GDMF) Board, an international non-governmental organisation. Owais has many years of professional experience in counselling with private clients at various agencies in the Deaf community. He graduated with a Master’s degree in Islamic Studies at the Markfield Institute in Higher Education, validated by Newman University. He also held a diploma in Deaf Studies at the University of Bristol and NVQ Level 4 qualification in BSL (equivalent to current Level 6), awarded by Signature.

Khalid Ashraf

Khalid is the Chief Executive and a co-founder of Deaf Muslim UK. He is responsible for the day-to-day leadership and integrating the strategic direction of the organisation. Khalid is currently serving on the Board of Directors of Deaf Ex-Mainstreamers Group (DEX), primarily focusing on education rights for deaf children in the UK; and sits on the Board of Trustees of UK Council on Deafness (UKCoD), a national umbrella body for organisations working with deaf people.

Khalid has many years of professional experience in the fields of architecture, structural engineering, access consultancy, onscreen TV presenting and interpreting for ITV. Khalid has graduated with a Master’s degree in Islamic Studies at the Markfield Institute of Higher Education, validated by Newman University. In addition, he studied Inclusive Environment: Design and Management at the University of Reading. He also holds an NVQ Level 4 qualification in BSL (equivalent to current Level 6), awarded by Signature. 

Farooq Murad

Farooq Murad supports the Islamic education and development of Deaf Muslims.  He has worked as a management and training consultant, and developed community regeneration solutions in the fields of education, training and employment. He has also delivered community and cross-cultural training programmes for government departments and the voluntary sector. From 2010 to 2014 he was the Secretary General of the Muslim Council of Britain, chairman of Muslim Aid (2004-08) and President of the Islamic Society of Britain (1998-2000).  At the Davos World Economic Forum, he attended as a constituent member.

Kerry has been a Muslim revert since 2007. Kerry has always felt drawn to Deaf Muslim UK, and has always felt honoured to work with such an inspiring team. Kerry hopes to use her life experiences and wisdom to contribute to a thriving organisation. Her motivation is to see equal access for all and that's where Deaf Muslim UK is currently aspiring to be; ‘The revolution in creating equal and accessible Islamic resources for all'.

Kerry holds an NVQ Level 6 in British Sign Language (BSL) which is equivalent to a degree, awarded by Signature. Kerry is also currently an Assistant Manager for  'Deafscope Ltd' and 'Deafscope Link CIC' who provide various accessible services to the Deaf Community across the UK.

Nashiru Abdulai

Nashiru Abdulai is the Co-Founder of Global Deaf Muslim (GDM), a non-profit organisation that strives to provide opportunities for the Deaf to learn about Islam and gain inclusion in the Muslim community. He led efforts to provide access to Islam in sign language and charity service for hundreds of Deaf Muslims, domestically and internationally. In 2018, Nashiru was elected by international organisations to become President of the Global Deaf Muslim Federation (GDMF) Board of Directors in Istanbul, Turkey. He spearheaded GDM-USA’s translation of the Quran into American Sign Language (ASL), and organised three international conferences for Deaf Muslims in Qatar (2013), Malaysia (2016), and Indonesia (2019).

Nashiru earned a Bachelor of Science in Social Work and Master of Human Resource Management from the National Technical Institute for the Deaf at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) and in 2018, he also obtained Master of Public Administration degree from American University in Washington, DC.
